The contextual Targeting tool is designed for AdWords users to target the context network.
That is really AdSense. In other words it’s designed for the people who buy Ads to display on your website.
So it makes sense that the data from this site is more related to AdSense than the basic Google keyword tool. In practice it is fantastic no matter what form of monetization you want on your site
It also seems to pull a lot of keywords that the Google AdWords Keyword tool doesn’t.
Like always though they are in there , it’s just hard to get them out!
Remember any keyword list can always be dropped into the keyword tool to get the search and CPC results.
Anyway I have put together a video that goes through using the tool for keyword research. How to find some great keywords to caret websites around and, because of the way the tool works, it gives you fantastic, high CPC secondary related keywords.
Now that’s a win in my book.
I show you a couple of different ways to use the tool both very easy.
Although I don’t cover it in the video this is great way to find the best keywords to expand an exiting site or to add additional related keywords to a post. An easy way to increase visitors and revenue.
Anyway don’t hang about here listening to me rabbit on go see the video now. It could help you get a new website up today.

Finally (21st November 2011) Yahoo site explorer has been switched off.
Officially it has been rolled into the Bing Webmaster Tools as part of the Yahoo/Microsoft search alliance.
Unfortunately that does not mean that you will find Yahoo site explorer at Bing. It simply means that for similar data (on your own websites only) can now be found at Bing Webmaster Tools.
Many will have notices that Yahoo site explorer has been becoming less and less effective as a backlink research tool since the Search Alliance was proclaimed. It seems the tool and, more importantly, the data has been seriously neglected for some months.
Even worse, all that data is now lost or at least inaccessible.
So what do you need now for backlink research? How do you analyse the competition of competitor sites?
Unfortunately your choices are very limited if you want to use free resources. As a side note I am seeing less and less free tools available in all areas of site research. Google’s own AdWords Keyword Tool remains free for keyword research but it stands completely alone. All keyword research tools now may offer a free option but the limitations are so great that they are, for all practical purposes, useless.
This seems to be the way of backlink research tools also. Thankfully there are two free options that still remain useful. Although both have paid versions that give you more. I just hope they do not further restrict their free options now that yahoo is defunct and many will be looking for reliable alternatives.
MajesticSEO certainly finds the most backlinks and if you are looking at total backlinks then this is the tool you should use. The data is current and even a brand new site will see data within 14 days.
Conveniently is shows both “the last 30 days” and “historical (total) data. This is great for seeing current link growth (becoming very important for modern off-page SEO) as well as overall links.
Open Site Explorer from SEOMOZ does not find as many backlinks but it does display a comprehensive list of the links it finds (conveniently in order of page authority – think page rank but better).
Be sure to include (or not as required) the “www” in the domain name as OSE sees the www and non-www versions as separate urls.
For both MajesticSEO and Open Site Explorer you will need to create a free account to get the functionality. Both tools have a paid version that gives you additional information but for general use the free versions are pretty good.
PS you can find a quick walk around MajesticSEO at the end of the video on the home page of BacklinkNetworks.net
What tools do you use for your research?
Can you reccomend any or tell us about your experiences?

Do want more money from your website or blog for no extra work, no extra visitors, no extra traffic? Of course you do!
OK, there is some work to be done but I mean you don’t have to keep doing more work. This is a one off activity that will decrease your bounce rate dramatically and increase your revenue and even build a list you can market to (even more revenue). All without adding even one single extra site visitor.
Recent Google Panda updates has made a dramatic change to the way google ranks websites. One of the key factors Google now use to assess a sites “worthiness” is the bounce rate. That just means if someone looks at the first page of your site and then leaves your site before looking at any other pages then it is a bounce. Obviously you want people to stay on your site longer and look at more pages. So does Google.
So here is one simple method to improve your bounce rate. It’s not complicated, in fact it’s darn right simple. It’s not even new but how we do this is a little different and you will see how it works so well.
You probably know that giving away a freebie report or ebook is a favourite way to get people to subscribe to an email list. Well it’s also great for reducing your bounce rate.
In this case you don’t ask for an opt-in or email sign up. You simply give them a direct download link.
OK, here’s the clever bit. You put the download link on another page of your website!
What you do is put a link (on your homepage or landing page) advertising the free download. That link goes directly to another web page on your site or blog. That page should be full of great interesting content of course and the final link to the download should be at the bottom of the page.
So to get to the link a visitor needs to go to at least one other page. You could even add in another “hop” and go to a third page but you should a little creative and not just give your visitor the run around. For instance when you get to the first download link you could offer a “special” pro version of the download or check for latest updates or offer another download altogether. A little imagination and you can come up with some novel ideas.
Downside to this is that visitors may be drawn away from the ads you are trying to get them to click on. However with the dramatically reduced bounce rate the additional rankings alone may offset that.
Next step though is to be clever with download. It needs to be interesting of course but you can use pretty much any content you want (not ignoring copyright of course) as Google will not be ranking your download document so duplicate content etc. is not a worry. It doesn’t have to be huge just useful and interesting.
There are two things you must do to your download.
1. Add links back to your site
Add links back to your site referring to info pages, videos, images or even products.
2. Monetize your document
You can’t add Adsense ads of course but Amazon products or Clickbank products are great.
Use you imagination and you can easily create a 5-10 pages of info, images, links, ads etc.
Finally you have the opportunity to build a list. Then you can mail to your list regularly both free and paid products and start making long term money.
If your primary objective is to build a list then you can link the final download link to an opt-in form (Aweber). If you are happy to make the list building secondary then add a link in the download document that offers another free product in exchange for the opt-in.
Either way it’s a great long term strategy.

You already know that most of the search engines use a number of different factors to judge the worth of a website.
Factors like the number and quality of backlinks and the quality of the content.
But more and more they are looking for new and better ways to judge the worth of a website.
Google in particular is now looking at the social networks like Facebook and Twitter and deciding just how much “buz” there is about the sites in their index. Those sites that are not found to have any “social standing” (i.e. they are not being put on someone’s wall, Tweeted, Digged, or Tumbled) they they will likely find it a lot harder to get or keep their search rankings.
We already know that social bookmarking is great way to get your sites indexed. It’s also a great way to add to your link diversity.
Now adding your sites to many web 2.0 social sites can create that “social standing” that Google are looking for in a great website.
There are automated bookmarking solutions like Social Monkee (and I recommend that), but they do not use high authority social sites. Not the household names.
This is where My Social Syndicator comes into it’s own. It brings all the high authority social networks together into one easy to use interface. It makes it a breeze to add your website to dozens of social sites in no time at all.
It’s not automated backlinking, it’s just great software that takes all the hard work out of getting your site onto as many social networks as possible.
Oh, and did I mention it’s free…….
Check it out at http://mysocialsyndicator.com
Actually this refers to any kind of communication where you need an end result.
Looking to convince your boss to give you a pay rise?
Want that holiday in Florida but the wife/husband is not so keen?
Need to convince a company to take your services?
On paper, on the phone, on TV or on the internet the emotions that generate the right human response to create an “acceptance” are all the same.
In the above respect, everyone is a potential customer and everyone will be reticent to buy your product or accept your proposal. Thoughts will be going through their minds like
- “I can’t afford it”
- “I don’t need it right now”
- “You don’t understand my problem”
- “What happens if I don’t like it”
- “How do I know you’re qualified”
- “I don’t believe you”
- “It won’t work for me”
The 12 steps of a killer sales letter are all designed to answer the customers questions, calm their fears, create an emotional situation where they are happy to buy.
Make no mistake about it. Most people buy based on emotion and NOT logic.
Say what? Not you, you always apply logic to your buying!
OK, does your car really need to have 180bhp to commute to work? That exercise bicycle that your shirts hang on? That doughnut at lunch time?
Get my point?
So the 12 steps are
- Get attention
- Identify the problem
- Provide the solution
- Present your credentials
- Show the benefits
- Give social proof
- Make your offer
- Inject scarcity
- Give a guarantee
- Call to action
- Give a warning
- Close with a reminder
The sales letter should grab immediate attention by hitting emotionality buttons and continue to pull your prospective customer through the sales letter adding more and more emotion as it heads to it’s conclusion. Eventually closing the sale right her and then.
Never let a prospect “come back later” because they probably won’t.
Use eye popping and heart stopping headline. Make sure you get them aboard in that crucial 6 seconds.
That means visually good as well as good words. See end of this post for free headline graphic creator.
Want a system that will make you a lot of money? –rubbish
You Need the System That Made Me $14,263.76 In One Weekend – much better
3 Tiny Steps That Made Me $14,263.76 Overnight – even better
Identify the Problem
To sell something you need to convince your prospect that they have a problem and you will fix it. That problem needs to be a BIG problem.
If you were selling life insurance for example you would not say “you don’t have life insurance”. That’s not a major problem. It doesn’t show the effect of the problem.
You would say something like “Your family could be left homeless if you aren’t properly insured”. Then you would agitate the problem. “Your kids will have to drop out of college and would end up never having a decent job”. Your grand children…
well you see where I’m going and why I never became an insurance salesman
Provide the Solution
But hey, miracle upon miracle, you have a fantastic solution. Just headline what that solution is at this point and tell them there worries are over.
Present your credentials
this bit is where you ensure that the potential customer knows you are the expert. Or have access to the experts, or are being backed by the right people. Tell them how you made this work for others. What great results you have had or even just how qualified you are. Basically anything that will prove to them that you are the person to listen to and trust in this endeavour.
Show the Benefits
This one that many people get wrong. There is much confusion between “benefits” and “features”. At his point we DO Not want features.
Features are what stuff does.
Benefits are what stuff does for us.
All round, hyper fast inflating, super protection air bags fitted to all models… is a feature
You crash, you won’t die .. is a benefit!
Try listing all the feature and turning then into benefits.
Did you ever see a beer commercial that said it tastes nice? No, it makes you cool, it makes you smart, it makes you attractive to the opposite sex, it makes you forget the daily drudge. Those are benefits (in a sales sense!)
Bullet points are great for this
Give Social Proof
Social proof is very powerful. Basically if you can see that others have already gained the benefit of a product then you will be much more likely to buy. Who wants to be the first to try something untested right?
This usually means testimonial from happy customers.
Word of warning. If you don’t have any do not make them up, do not pay someone on fiverr to create them, do not borrow somebody else’s. Firstly when you get caught out it will destroy your reputation and your business. Secondly Clickbank and others are now clamping down heavily on many dodgy practices and this is one of them.
If you don’t have testimonial just don’t put them in. Just make sure the other 11 steps are covered. Once you sell a few things you will get testimonials.
Make Your Offer
Now it’s time to get down to price. Not just price though but VALUE. Thoroughly explain everything you are offering and put a value on each part. Grow the value of your product. Add bonus items if you want to increase value.
The idea is to show a huge value for the total package/product and that your price is steal. You can’t just make this stuff up though. You can’t say that it was $500 and your are selling cheap at $50. If it never sold at $500 then that is fraudulent.
This has been the mainstay of many a sales letter in the IM world for some time. It’s almost a joke now. In fact false scarcity will actually get you into trouble with the Clickbank and the others.
Yes, use scarcity but it must be genuine. If you say 100 copies only then you had better be sure that is all you will sell. This works well for some products like PLR for example where selling only a few copies will actually make them more valuable and you can charge a higher price.
If you want to sell as many copies as possible though then try limiting your bonuses. Say bonus items for first 50 customers only.
Give a Guarantee
Should go without saying but many people still argue over refunding money to unhappy customers. Yes you may get ripped off by a few that simply buy and refund but they are few and far between. Fact is that if they are unhappy customers then a fast refund may get them back on side and confident enough to buy your next product. If they are scammers , well why would you want them as customers.
So money back NQA guarantee of at least 30 or 60 days
Call to Action
Based on the assumption that your potential buyer could still be hesitating tell them exactly what to do. Do not leave them to make any decisions themselves.
So Click that buy button below. Fill ion your email address here – or whatever it is you want them to do. Tell the exactly.
Give a Warning
For those that may still be hesitating add a warning. What would be the outcome if they don’t buy?. Think about the benefits. They would have none of those. So tell them straight.
Close with a Reminder
Finalise with a summary. A key benefit, How valuable your offer is, Your guarantee, how to pay and any other key notes.
A few More Tips
Make your sales copy easy to understand. Aim at making it readable by the average 10 year old. Keep your sentences short and avoid lots of long, high falutin’ words.
Don’t make it just one dense lump of text. Break it into regular paragraphs. Add clean graphics. Ensure plenty of “whitespace”. Don’t scare off your customers with a complex read.
Sure expert copywriters get paid a lot of money and can produce some great sales copy. If you are starting out it’s unlikely you can afford one. If you can ,you have to ask yourself if they are any good!
However by following the formula above you can consistently write pretty good sales copy that will convert your product. Yes, you still need good products but who will know unless you sell a few?
So not having a good sales page IS NOT a reason for holding back. Don’t let it be your stumbling block. Use the 12 steps above, create your own copy and go for it.
To help with the graphics that can really make your page look professional I have put together a sales graphics creator. Its completely free for you to use and simple as pie. Type the text you want. A few clicks of the mouse to make stunning headlines, payment buttons, guarantee certificates etc. No Photoshop or design skills needed. It really is that easy.
There is also a video tutorial (though probably not needed)
I had an email the other day asking some questions about using
phrase match or exact match for keywords. I stated to type my quick reply
and soon realized that trying to explain it all in a few words was
not easy. After half an hour I ended up with a thesis instead of
Anyway, some of it is a little heavy but if you can get through it
all without falling asleep i think it will clarify a lot of things
about keywords and broad/phrase/exact matches etc. It is more
complicated than the simplistic explanations normally given and I
try to explain the why as well as the what, which always helps me
Maybe someday I will put it in a video but for now it’s all here in
Anyway enjoy (or sleep, your choice:)
Phrase match – Broad match – Exact match.
There is a difference between a “Phrase match search”. i.e. what
is typed into Google with quotes around it (which is really an
exact match search)and the phrase match results in Google Adwords
KW tool (GAWKWT)
This is because GAWKWT gives results that would trigger an Adwords
ad. NOT find a website via the search.
So results would look like this
keyword = “large red nose”
exact match = “large red nose for sale”
The exact keyword appears in the search expression
phrase match = “how to fix a red large nose” or ” a will a large
red moustache enhance a small nose”
Note the keywords do not need to be in the same order, just exist
in the search expression.
Broad match = “Does Alice Cooper have a large nose” or “Rudolf the
red nosed reindeer”
Only part of the keyword need exist in the search expression and
even related keywords can trigger an Adwords with broad match
So, in GAWKWT:
An EXACT MATCH result is where the keyword appears in the results
in the exact word order.
A PHRASE MATCH is where the all the keyword words appears in the
results in any order and even inter-spaced by other words.
A BROAD MATCH is where any of the Keyword words appear in the
results and even closely related words like plurals etc.)
Things are different, however, in Google Search Results
When Typing into Googles search page the rules are slightly
So, In Google search: (in this sense “keyword” and “search
expression” are interchangeable descriptions)
Phrase match = “large red nose” (keyword in quotes) would return
websites with that exact search expression in it. So it is more
like the Exact match of GAWKWT.
Broad match = large red nose (keyword without quotes) would return
websites that contain all, any or related keywords like plurals
etc.. Similar to the broad match of GAWKWT.
It is also important to understand that Google’s search results are
not just based on matching keywords to website content. They are
also based on off-page SEO (backlinks) and anchor text.
Anchor text is the actual text that is the clickable link from
another website. When searching for a keyword In more mature blogs
or those with a lot of backlinks, Google will also look at the
anchor text for the keywords.. So in extreme examples a website can
display one the first page results for a keyword that it does not
actually have on the page. It is likely that they appear heavily in
the anchor texts of other websites linking to this one. So when
looking at the actual search results, they may not be absolutely
reflective of the “keyword match” you may expect.
The final thing to look at is the number of results displayed when
you perform a Google search.
A phrase match search (exact?) will generally show a lot less
results than a broad match search for the same keyword. This is
fairly obvious given all the above information.
So considering that a “phrase” match generally means the whole
keyword is found in the website content, you can assume that the
total number of sites shown in the search result are the
competitors for that keyword.
This has been taken one step further and has been used as a measure
of the “strength of competition” as well as the “number of
competitors” . Now although the later is probably accurate enough,
the assumption of the former, in my opinion (and testing) does not
If you are looking to estimate the strength of competition for any
particular keyword using the Google search results then you will
need to apply some additional search parameters to improve your
Firstly adding “allintitle” to the keyword (using phrase match)
will give you the number of sites that have the exact keyword in
the title tag. This is likely to be sites that have
specifically optimized their on-site SEO for the keyword.
Secondly adding “allinanchor” to the phrase match keyword search
will return the number of sites that appear to have their of-site
SEO optimized for that keyword. (but keep in mind that this would
list a site with only 1 Backlink with the keyword in the anchor
This is likely to give you a better measure of competition for the
keyword but it may not be as accurate as it may seem at first.
Firstly, there is no way to be sure that the results of both those
searches include the same websites. So if, for instance, you
returned 50,000 sites in the “allintitle” search and 50,000 sites
in the “allinanchor” results then you can make the following
From one extreme you could have 50,000 sites that are completely
on-site and off-site optimized for that keyword.
At the other extreme you could 100,000 sites that have either the
keyword in the title or one of it’s backlink anchors contain the
In the first case you would be facing stiff competition but in the
second case there would be very little competition even though the
total number of competing sites is higher.
Now, to add one more layer of issue with this you need to consider
the actions of your fellow marketers over the last few years.
When everything on the websites was more “natural” then using
the above selections would probably have been OK in maybe 75% (or
even more) of the time. However the very fact that everyone has
adopted the “competition criteria” means that they have skewed the
results. Highly targeting the keywords that fit the parameters
will, by that very action, make their competition unnaturally high
and make obsolete the very selection process that chose them in the
OK, lets now move from keyword Competition to Search Volume.
The search volume of a keyword is important as it is a guide to how
many visitors you may get to your website if it was optimised for
that keyword. Search volumes come from GAKWT not the Google search
results. Clearly it is better to choose higher search volumes than
But which measure exact/phrase or broad?
When considering visitors from natural search engine results (NOT
Adwords) I find it easier to compare the GAWKWT exact match to
Google Search Phrase match and the GAWKWT broad match to the same
in Google results. You can then forget about the Phrase match
results in GAWKWT.
When a website is new (and optimised) it will tend to rank for it’s
main keywords only. Over time it begin to rank for longer tail
keywords and related terms until at some point as the site becomes
more ”authoritative” it is likely that the longer tail keywords
will bring in more traffic than the primary original keywords.
So when looking for keywords for anew website you should use the
EXACT search results in GAWKWT. This is a better indication of the
early traffic to your site.
For the long term though you should look at the broad match
results. This is an indication of the traffic you may get as the
site ranks for the longer and related keywords. It is indicative of
the ultimate potential of the site.
So a keyword with say 1000 exact searches a month and 100,000
global a month would be good starter but potentially a very high
traffic site I the long term.
A 4000 a month exact search keyword with only 10,000 broad match
global results would be better in the short term but unlikely to
ever achieve the same traffic levels of the previous example
